A Fresh Approach to Disability Advocacy

Hello everyone, and thanks for stopping by! I am beyond excited to share my writing and disability advocacy journey with you. It’s been quite an adventure, but after completing my Ph.D. in education and postdoc in educational administration, I was finally able to dedicate time to finishing up my first book, (originally titled “Ten Tiny Fingers, Ten Tiny Toes: Caring for the Type 1 Diabetic Infant & Child”) in February 2023. After eight years of research, interviewing and writing (with a few fits and starts in between), this work was finally shared with the world. But as time has gone by, I realized that there’s a lot more to learn about publishing than just writing. And so, in December 2023, I revamped the book with a new cover design, internal structure AND title. That original work is now published under the title Superhero Moms, Warrior Kids and I think it’s much more inviting than the first rendition.

As someone who has spent years advocating for families who face discrimination and marginalization, I wanted to make sure that this book was as appealing and accessible to as broad of an audience as possible. Hopefully the revisions accomplish that goal–I’d love to hear what you think!

On another note, although I’m pretty deep into The Sugar Squad Chronicles right now (the 11 year old is a demanding boss), I’m still on the lookout for new contributors for my next adult nonfiction book project, “Superhero Families: Caring for Kids with Complex Conditions.” If you have experience caring for a child with a physical or mental health condition, I would love to hear your story. I’m interested in exploring a range of topics, including the parenting experience, the sibling experience, the grandparent experience, and the experiences of aunts, uncles, and other caregivers outside of the nuclear family. I’m also interested in hearing about the impact on marriage and partnership, experiences with supports through the school and community, and cultivating resilience and coping strategies.

If you’re interested in contributing to this project, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I can’t wait to hear your stories, and I’m excited to work together to create a book that can truly make a difference.

Thank you for your support, and here’s to the next big adventure!
